He's a Kepa! Chelsea's £71.6m Arrizabalaga speaks...
Matt Law was at Stamford Bridge to witness the unveiling of Chelsea's replacement for Thibaut Courtois. The 23-year-old spoke very calmly about the pressure that might come with his price tag:
Responding to the first question in front of the English media, there was an acknowledgement from Kepa that Chelsea have taken a gamble by spending so much money on a 23-year-old with one full senior cap who has never previously played outside Spain.“It’s very brave from the club to sign me,” said Kepa. “In terms of the price - in terms of being the most expensive keeper in the world - it’s something I don’t think about. I’m just going to be myself and try to give my best to the club.“I don’t really think about the price. It is not something I have in my mind. I just think Chelsea have made a great bet in taking me. I’m really, really happy to be here and I will put everything I can to repay the trust they have put in me.”
Everton done? Everton are not done.
Reports saying that a deal sheet has been submitted for Kurt Zoumato join them on loan - they'll have an extension until 7pm to get the deal done. Heeeeeeeere's Chris Bascombe:
Another late move by Everton. A loan deal is agreed for Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma. The deal sheet was filed by 5pm, so now it is a race to complete a medical and other formalities by 7pm.
More on Ings...
Chris Bascombe has conveyed Southampton's slight panic quite well here, I think:
In a reversal of the trend, Southampton trying to get an LFC player. They've made a loan move with obligation to buy Danny Ings. Deal sheet is in, so they have until 7pm to get the medical and other formalities done.
Fulham: far from finished
After a very sound window, Slavisa Jokanovic is still doing business:
- Atletico Madrid forward Luciano Vietto could be joining on loan
- Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah is also close to completing a loan move
Can you do too much business? Fulham had such a settled, tidy side last season (albeit with little depth on the bench) but they have reinforced - and then some - this summer. My season ticket was a bargain.
Everton chase £22m Marcos Rojo...
Here's that Manchester United update I promised, thanks to Jason Burt:
Everton are hoping to sign Marcos Rojo from Manchester United for £22million before the transfer window closes. The permanent deal for the 28-year-old Argentinean defender could go down to the wire once Everton are finalised their moves for the Barcelona pair Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes.Officials are first concluding the moves for the players with Mina due to sign on a permanent deal while Gomes – who has a slight injury but not one to prevent the move – agreeing a one-year loan deal.
The signing of Rojo is also now expected to happen which is intriguing given the suggestions out of United were that they would not allow him to go before a replacement was signed. It remains to be seen if that happens.Rojo has been told he can leave with United having four other centre-halves but Jose Mourinho has been pushing hard to bring in another one.
Poch scotches transfer talk
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino appears to have conceded defeat with the transfer deadline looming. Sam Dean reports:
Mauricio Pochettino has said he is not expecting Tottenham Hotspur to make any signings before the close of the transfer window today.Tottenham have not recruited or sold a single player in this summer’s transfer window but Pochettino insisted he is happy with his squad.Tottenham waited until yesterday to finally make an opening bid for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, offering £25m for the midfielder. The offer was rejected by Villa, who no longer need to sell Grealish after the club’s financial troubles were eased by the investment of Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, the new majority owners.Speaking this afternoon, Pochettino said: “I think it is so difficult now because it is only four hours until the end and I do not have news now. I am sure it will be so difficult. Always, until you finish the game, you cannot say ‘now it’s the end of the game’. But in four hours it will be difficult to sign some players.
“Of course it is difficult to understand for people that Tottenham did not sign or sell a player, but sometimes in football you need to behave differently.“If we are happy with our squad and cannot improve our squad, sometimes it is better to keep our squad together.”Pochettino added: “We have a very good squad, with very good players and it is very difficult to add players to that. We didn't sell players and with 25 players in the squad it is difficult to add players. It's not about adding because it's fashionable to sign players.”Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele have all been linked with moves away from Tottenham this summer, and Pochettino has asked for their “commitment” for their new season, which begins against Newcastle United this weekend.“I was so clear with everyone,” Pochettino said. “I need their commitment, 25 players will full commitment but not only [for] one week, two weeks, one month.”
Red-line Day
And now Chris Bascombe has all the action - or lack of it - from Liverpool who, of course, have already wrapped up some good business so far this window.
Liverpool have been taking a far more sensible approach to deadline day in recent years. Gone are the days of Ryan Babel taking a helicopter tour of England, awaiting guidance where to land.No more do we hear about frantic late negotiations in Eastern European countries, Liverpool chief executives unsure if they are buying a footballer or re-enacting an especially tense scene written by Ian Fleming.Contrary to his pitchside persona, Jurgen Klopp craves serenity. He has been saying for weeks he was not likely to buy anyone else, but for obvious reasons the TV crews edited that out to maintain the mirage of late activity.
Liverpool do want to shift some players, but with the European deadline not until the end of the month there is no rush.Divock Origi and Simon Mignolet, for example, still have time to assess options abroadThat same will be true for Danny Ings unless one of the interested Premier League clubs are prepared to pay at least £5 million for a year’s loan – or significantly more for a permanent deal.
Goodison goodies
Chris Bascombe has an Everton-flavoured round-up of news:
Everton were always destined to be among the busiest on deadline day. If they can secure a centre-back this afternoon it will swell optimism.Barcelona’s Colombian defender Yerry Mina has been pursued for months and the noises within Goodison are increasingly hopeful. A medical can take place in Barcelona once agreement is reached. A team has been dispatched to Spain awaiting further advice.
With Bernard also to be confirmed, Marco Silva will be adding pedigree to his squad.Yannick Bolasie, however, may have to stay and fight for his place unless a cash offer materialises. There are several clubs exploring a loan, but Everton are only interested in a permanent sale.Midfielder Mo Besic looks to be heading back to Middlesbrough for around £4 million.
Breaking: Grealish will make one last push for Spurs move
By Sam Wallace and Jason Burt
Jack Grealish will meet with Steve Bruce this afternoon in what the 22-year-old believes is his last chance of convincing Aston Villa to sell him to Tottenham Hotspur.
The meeting at the training ground is not expected to feature the club’s two new owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens who have so far refused to sanction the £25 million deal.
Grealish believes that his chances of a move to Spurs are slim at this stage. He has asked his boyhood club to allow him to go and so far the £25 million from Spurs, plus the possibility of Josh Onomah being persuaded to go in the other direction have not swayed Villa.
How goalkeepers became hot property
In an idle moment, Adam Hurrey calculated that 40% of the money ever spent on Premier League keepers changed hands in the last 12 months.
And here is the opus he put together off the back of that discovery: A £175m glove story: How the Premier League finally decided to break the bank for its goalkeepers
Back in 1992, the very first goalkeeper to be signed in the Premier League era - during a summer in which clubs were scratching their heads over how to deal with the imminent, game-changing backpass law - was Alan Kelly. Sheffield United paid Preston £150,000 for his services. For the next five seasons, the average fee paid for a Premier League keeper was around £850,000. Then, in 1997 - which happened to be when the backpass law was amended to forbid them from picking the ball up from a throw-in as well - there was a minor explosion in the cost of goalkeepers. Top-flight clubs spent almost £15m on new number ones, including Brad Friedel (with hair) to Liverpool for £1.35m and Ed de Goey to Chelsea for a shade over £3m.
Zinchenko is staying put
Our man in the Midlands John Percy has confirmed that Oleksandr Zinchenko’s £16m move from Manchester City to Wolves is off.
Zinchenko reportedly got cold feet at the 11th hour and will remain at Eastlands. There's huge frustration at City and Wolves who had done so much work to try and finalise the deal.
The Perce report
John Percy writes in, with updates on Burnley, Southampton and Arsenal.
Burnley are in talks over a £15m deal for former England under-21 international James Ward-Prowse, with Southampton stepping up their interest in Danny Welbeck.Southampton are close to offloading Ward-Prowse to Burnley with a fee almost agreed between the two clubs.Welbeck, the Arsenal forward, could move to Southampton after being made available by Unai Emery.
Just a thought on Grealish
The way it's been reported is that Daniel Levy has dropped a clanger by leaving it too late to sign Jack Grealish. The reality though is that he was a potential squad player they would have liked to sign but weren't going to be held to ransom about it.
There's been loads of noise about Grealish from the media but imagine Levy and Tottenham will get over it pretty quickly.
A bit more on Arsenal
Jeremy Wilsonwrites in:
Quiet day expected at Arsenal. Club has already addressed main areas that people always wanted tackled under Arsene Wenger. Some tough defenders (Sokratis, Lichtsteiner), improved goalkeeper options (Leno) and, yes, even a holding midfielder (Torreira). Although their big spending in January has meant that they are often shopping in different markets this summer to City, Liverpool, United and Chelsea.Club would be open to letting Welbeck go for right offer but nothing currently moving on that. Ospina likely to be goalkeeper who leaves but later in international window. Club still confident on Ramsey contract extension.
Done deal
As expected, 21-year-old centre-back Filip Benkovic has joined Leicester from Dinamo Zagreb, with Caglar Soyuncu expected to join later from Freiburg
Leicester insist this won't mean Harry Maguire moves to Manchester United.
Benkovic told Leicester's official website that: "I will give all my heart to this club, to all the fans, to everybody. Hopefully we’ll have a very good result this season. The ambitions of Leicester City are so big. I like the Club very much and I think it’s a very good step for me to the next level. I’m very happy to be here."
What can we expect at Arsenal?
Not a lot, according to our correspondent Jeremy Wilson.
Just on Perez by the way, I always thought it was strange how little game time he got. Whenever he did play - including away at Basel when he scored a hat-trick - he looked pretty tidy, certainly no worse than Danny Welbeck or Theo Walcott.
This just in...
From our man in the Midlands John Percy.
Oleksandr Zinchenko’s £16m move from Manchester City to Wolves is back in doubt again. The Ukrainian wing-back was scheduled for a medical at Wolves this morning but there seems to be an issue over player terms and he has not turned up. This one could run to the final hours...
Business at last for Cardiff
Cardiff have endured a frustrating transfer window but midfielder Victor Camarasa, 24, has arrived for a medical as he puts the finishing touches on a loan move from Real Betis.
Manager Neil Warnock is also hoping to complete a loan deal for Harry Arter from Bournemouth before the day is out.
Fulham busy
Across west London and Fulham could make three new signings today - according to The Guardian.
First of all Marseille's Cameroon international midfielder André-Franck Zambo Anguissa is due for a medical at Craven Cottage ahead of a £26m move.
Joe Bryan meanwhile is expected to join for £6m from Aston Villa, and Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico could arrive on a season-long deal.
Fulham have already spent £50million this summer.
Welcome Mateo
The deal we all knew about has been confirmed - Mateo Kovacic has joined Chelsea from Real Madrid on a season-long loan.
Kovacic told the official Chelsea website: "I am really happy and excited to be here at Chelsea. It is an amazing feeling. I will try to do my best for this club. It is a new league for me, the beginning is always tough but I am sure the coach and my new team-mates will help me and I am looking forward to a great season."
He's a Kepa
Chelsea's new goalkeeper Kepa has been discussing his move to Stamford Bridge with the club's official app, The 5th Stand: "All clubs need to fight to win titles and what all players want is to win," he said. "So what I would like is to win more titles for the club."This is what I aspire to do. I would like to be remembered at this club when I leave years down the line as a goalkeeper that has helped the club win a lot of titles and gone down in history in that way."
Full story
Our man on the ground Ian Whittell was at Mourinho's press conference and has filed this report:
Jose Mourinho insists Manchester United will do no further business on today’s transfer deadline day.Speaking before training on Thursday morning - eight hours before the summer window was due to close - the United manager claimed his search for at least one more major close season signing was at an end.
No deadline day deals at Man Utd
According to Jose Mourinho, who was asked about whether he would be adding to his squad in his press conference just now.
“The information I have is no,” said Mourinho . “I’m not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today so it is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed.”
Done deal
Manchester City have signed the highly-rated Australian winger Daniel Arzani, 19, from their franchise club Melbourne City FC.
Arzani, supposedly the most talented player Australia have produced since Harry Kewell, will reportedly be loaned straight away to Celtic.
Hmm, modern football eh?
The 12 types of transfer that seem to happen every window
Thisis very good from Adam Hurrey, including The yo-yo striker
Being "too good for the Championship, not good enough for the Premier League" must be one of the more frustrating niches to occupy. All that hard work over 46 games, a steady stream of authoritative finishes that most people will only half-watch on Quest to pass the time before Match of the Day comes on, perhaps scraping into the promotion places...only to be overlooked in the top flight. The Zone of Cameron Jerome, the Former Republic of Robert Earnshaw, the Void of Vydra: whatever you want to call that crack between the top two divisions, that's where you'll find a small army of tidy but limited goalscorers who will struggle with that step up for the rest of their playing days.
Wolves at the door
What a window it's been for Wolves, who yesterday signed Adama Traore for a club-record £18m from Middlesbrough to take their summer spending to £75m.
They're still not done though and are reportedly preparing to bring in Anderlecht’s Leander Dendoncker and Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City today.
Both players are due for medicals at Molineux.
Everton making moves
A couple of exciting signings likely to happen for Everton today. Shakhtar's Brazilian playmaker Bernard arrived yesterday for his medical and will be confirmed as an Everton player today.
Barcelona's Yerry Mina - he of scoring set-piece goal after set-piece goal for Colombia at the World Cup - is also expected to join before the window closes.
Meanwhile, Everton are interested in signing Barca's out-of-favour Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes, but that one remains in the balance.
I wonder what Richard Keys makes of it all.
Perez on his way
Lucas Perez, who throughout his time at Arsenal looked like a surly 13-year-old on a family holiday, will end his two-year Emirates stint today by joining West Ham for £5m.
Perez never really celebrated when he scored for Arsenal, so would he reverse the convention and celebrate wildly should he score against his former club when they host West Ham on August 25?
Chelsea Chelsea
Today will be more about departures for Chelsea after they broke the record for a goalkeeper yesterday by signing Kepa Arrizabalaga for £71.6m.
Thibaut Courtois is heading to Real Madrid (he'll be presented at midday), Tiemoue Bakayoko will join AC Milan, but Eden Hazard is expected to stay.
Chelsea also signed Mateo Kovacic on loan yesterday, and will likely send out a few more players on loan today.
Livin' La Vida Loca
I've always wanted to use that as a blog post header, and now thanks to Domagoj Vida I can. The Croatian defender has been linked with a move from Besiktas to Arsenal, who have already made five signings this window. The policy of signing players early is a real departure from the late Wenger days of deadline day supermarket sweeps.
We all remember Park Chu-young.
10 hours to go
Morning all,
Welcome to our live blog of the final day of this summer's transfer window, as Premier League clubs do the equivalent of a Red-Bull powered all-nighter on the eve of dissertation deadline.
In years gone by it would be customary to start a blog like this by poking fun at Sky Sports' overblown coverage of TDD, but that somehow feels a bit passe now. Even they seem to be in on the joke and as satire goes, sending it up now feels about as fresh as a Little Britain impression.
That said at least this year the whole thing has some novelty value with the window closing before the start of the season rather than the usual August 31 (that deadline remains in place in the other major European leagues - more on that here).
So, what can we expect today? Manchester United will surely be busy, as they try desperately to sign a centre-back. Leicester's Harry Maguire remains their main target despite failing with a bid to sign him yesterday, while they could also step up their attempts to sign Jerome Boateng from Bayern Munich and Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld.
Jose Mourinho will face the media at 9am for a press conference to preview tomorrow's match against Leicester City, so we can explain some cryptic comments and barbed complaints then.
Of the 'Big Six', Tottenham are also expected to make moves today having gone through the entire window without signing a player (they are the only club in the top flight to have been so inactive). Aston Villa's Jack Grealish is their main target, and after having a bid rejected by Villa yesterday they may need the midfielder to force the deal through.
Elsewhere, Tiemoue Bakayoko is expected to join AC Milan from Chelsea, Everton are interested in signing Andre Gomes from Barcelona, while Crystal Palace are expected to hang on to Wilfried Zaha.
We'll keep you up to date with all the big moves as they happen.
